Three Days in Magical Madrid
Enjoy the latest blob by the Avid Traveller:
In the Autumn of 2024, Calum Glenny, the Avid Travellrer embarked on a whirlwind 72-hour trip to Madrid with friends, beginning with a vibrant, history-filled city expedition. Walking through busy squares, we immersed ourselves in the city's history and dynamic environment.
Our group's diverse preferences caused numerous activities. Suzanne and Richard began the very firstday 1 evening with a remarkable supper at Bodega de los Secretos, a comfortable, centuries-old dining establishment full of charm. On day 2 my spouse and I signed up with a tapas and white wine walking tour led by the enthusiastic Mario. We went to a number of local hotspots. I was intrigued by the Meson de Champinon, a bar-restaurant which specialised in mushrooms and only mushrooms.
The last day was all about cooking, with Pamela and Bill setting up a paella masterclass at the glamorous Ritz Mandarin Oriental. Chef Oliver Menendez directed us through the intricacies of making conventional Valencian paella and black rice with squid and lobster. The experience was coupled with tastings of local sherries and wines, making it one of the trip's highlights.
We rounded off the weekend with a visit to Teatro Flamenco Madrid. This intimate venue showcased the raw emotion and charm of flamenco dancing, offering an ideal cultural capstone.
Throughout the trip, we delighted in unforgettable meals at regional dining establishments like Casa Verona and Casa Alberto, where we delighted in authentic Spanish dishes such as anchovies in olive oil, croquettes, and even the well known calamari sandwich. The Mercado de San Miguel was another standout, using a glance into Spain's rich cooking customs.
